Simon "Sam" Suthoff

October 9, 1948 — April 10, 2024

Simon “Sam” Suthoff, 75, entered the next life on Wednesday, April 10, 2024 surrounded by family.

Sam was born October 9, 1948 in Jefferson City to the late Andrew and Celeste (Strope) Suthoff.  He grew up on the family farm in St. Thomas and attended grade school in St. Thomas. He was a 1966 graduate of Helias High School.   Sam went on to attend The University of Missouri, achieving his Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering.  In 1972, he began working for McDonnell Douglas Aviation, now Boeing.  While at Boeing, Sam worked on many high profile projects. He also earned an MBA at Lindenwood University.  He retired from Boeing in 2007 and continued as a consultant until 2015.  In 2008 he purchased a farm on Schulte Lane and began working on GPS for farm equipment. His next project was pivot irrigation systems, this work continues.

The oldest of eight children, Sam’s parents instilled the value of faith and education, taking pride in your accomplishments and continued service to your church and community.  

On April 28, 1979 Sam married Shelley O’Brien in Florissant, MO.  They were blessed with  three sons, Andrew and twins, Matt and Mark. Sam made sure he was thoroughly involved in their lives. He was involved with coaching football, little league baseball, and volunteering in Boy Scouts where his sons each earned the rank of Eagle Scout.  Sam was the 2022 St. Rose Philippine Duchesne Service Award Recipient for implementing his idea for their main fundraiser; DAB All-Sports Lottery. He was on the St. Thomas the Apostle Church renovation committee and was instrumental in its early organization. To ensure a proper sound system was installed, he spent countless hours making sure the new sound system and acoustics were perfect. Sam loved fishing. He organized the annual Suthoff/Strope family fishing trips, where many memories were made and truth’s were stretched.  He also loved his numerous fishing trips to Alaska and Canada

Survivors include his wife, Shelley of St. Peters, three sons, Andrew of St. Peters, Matthew of Maplewood, and Mark of Chicago Il. two sisters, Nancy Wekenborg of Jefferson City, Diane (James) Holzer of St. Charles, three brothers, Doug (DeAnne) Suthoff of Independence, Jeff Suthoff of Jefferson City, Scott (Tracy) Suthoff of St. Thomas and two sisters-in-law, Lucy Suthoff of St. Thomas and Diane Suthoff of Springfield, and a large extended family. Sam was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Stephen and James Suthoff, brothers-in-law Dan Wekenborg, William O’Brien and nephew, David Suthoff.

On Friday, April 19, 2024 there will a prayer service beginning at 4:00 p.m. followed by visitation until 7:00 p.m. at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic School Parish Center, St. Thomas.  Visitation will continue at the church on Saturday at 10:00 a.m.  The Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Leonard Mukiibi officiating.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.   Trimble Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.   trimblefunerals.com
