Martha Ann "Marty" Spann

July 23, 1951 — February 9, 2021

Martha Ann “Marty” Spann, 69, of Jefferson City, passed away Tuesday, February 9, 2021, at her home surrounded by her family after a courageous 6+ year battle with cancer and is now in the arms of her Heavenly Father.

She was born July 23, 1951, in Rockford, IL, the daughter of the late John Hubert and Barbara Jean (Stoune) Phillips.

She was united in marriage on October 27, 1989, in St. Ann, Missouri, to John K. Spann who survives.

She graduated from high school in Rochelle, IL and went on to earn her degree in education at UMSL. Mary began teaching in 1973 at Francis Howell School District and taught there until her retirement in 2000.

In 2007, Marty and John moved to New Bloomfield, MO and she taught four years at Kingdom Christian Academy in Fulton, MO before working for the Secretary of State Office for five years. She and her husband moved to Jefferson City, MO.

Marty loved life and loved people. Because of her faith she looked for the good in people, had a serving attitude, and blessed other with her presence.

Marty was very active in many churches during her lifetime. She attended and taught Sunday School, was a Sunday School Supervisor, participated in choirs, praise teams, missions, Walk to Emmaus, and several other active committees. She was a mentor and example of her strong faith to anyone she met. She was a true Ambassador for Christ.

She was an active member of SunRise United Methodist Church in O’Fallon, MO and currently an active member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Jefferson City.

Marty was also a strong supporter of Coyote Hill-Jefferson City for foster children, participated in the early development of the program, and became a charter member of the Advisory Board for the first Coyote Hill foster home in the Jefferson City area.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend to many. Survivors include her husband of 31 years, John Spann, Jefferson City; three children, Philip (Amanda) Hutchcraft, Jefferson City; Mindy (Nathan) Bradley, Bettendorf, IA; Jarrett (Heather) Eberhardt, Sullivan, MO; two step-children, John E. Spann, St. Peters, MO; JoAnn Spann (Rick), Winfield, MO; nine grandchildren, Kait (Colton) Madalone, Megan Hutchcraft, Dylan Hutchcraft, Carlie Spann, John Riley Spann, Morgan Harmon, Emily Harmon, Jackson Bradley, Morgan Bradley; and one brother, John Phillips, Fresno, CA.

She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter-in-law, Jennifer Spann; and a sister, Sandra Stumph.

Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday, February 20, 2021, at Wesley United Methodist Church in Jefferson City.

Funeral service will be 12 p.m. Saturday at Wesley United Methodist Church with Pastor Tom Vansant and Pastor Bruce Baxter officiating. The service will be recorded and posted to Marty’s obituary page on the funeral home’s website by the following week.

The general public is welcome to attend the services while following social distancing guidelines. Facial coverings are suggested while in attendance.

Memorials are suggested to Coyote Hill-Jefferson City.
