Lawrence Bell Barrett, 89, formerly of Jefferson City, died Wednesday, January 11, 2012, at the VA Veterans Home in Mexico, Mo.
He was born on November 14, 1922, in Columbus, Ohio, the son of the late Tecumseh and Pheobia Bell Barrett.
He was married in 1949 to Ruth Wright in Columbus, Ohio.
He was married on December 14, 1957, in Jefferson City to Mary Lou Turner who preceded him in death on July 14, 2005.
A graduate of Central High School in Columbus, Ohio, Mr. Barrett was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict where he received two Bronze Stars and the United Nations Service Medal. He retired in 1963 as Sergeant First Class after twenty-one years of service with the Army.
He was employed as Reproduction Machine Operator with the Missouri Highway Patrol for twenty-one years until his retirement in 1984.
Mr. Barrett was a member of the Knights of Pythias; a 45-year member of Tony Jenkins Post 231 of the American Legion; and was an avid fan of the Cincinnati Reds and football.
He was of the Catholic faith.
Survivors include five children, Deborah L. (Nathan) Williams, Jefferson City; Larry W. Barrett, Jefferson City; and Brenda Barrett, Lawrence (Joann) Barrett, and Loretta Cookie Barrett, all of Columbus, Ohio; ten grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Edwina Dennis, Chicago, Ill.; a special niece, Wendy Gregory, Columbus, Ohio; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Tecumseh, Floyd, Frank, and Eugene Barrett; and one sister, Sarah Smith.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. on Wednesday, January 18, 2012, at Dulle-Trimble Funeral Home with the Rev. Cornell C. Sudduth, Sr., officiating.
Burial with military honors will be in Hawthorn Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 17th, at Dulle-Trimble Funeral Home.
