Janice Ann Hughes, 75, of Jefferson City, passed away Friday, July 7, 2023, at Jefferson City Manor.

She was born June 10, 1948, in Jefferson City, the daughter of LaVerne Joseph and Alma Marie (Kemna) Hughes.

A 1966 graduate of Helias High School, Janice received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from the University of Missouri in 1970.

Janice began her career as a physical education teacher in Huntsville, Missouri and later as a field advisor for the Conifer Girl Scout Council in Texarkana, Arkansas. She continued her career by taking her first vows with the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, in St. Louis. She was the Cottage Supervisor at the Village of St. Joseph, in Atlanta, Georgia and retired in June 2013 as the Social Ministries Coordinator for St. Francis Xavier Parish, in Kansas City, Missouri. There she worked in the Women’s Prison Ministry and was Coordinator of the Food Bank.

She was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church; Catholic Charities-Social Ministries Association, Kansas City, Missouri; Girl Scouts USA; Missouri Teacher’s Association; and Soroptimist Club, Texarkana, Arkansas.

Janice enjoyed the activities during her time with the Girl Scouts and earned the counselor nickname of “Chigger.”  Her pastimes were playing cards, adult coloring books and in earlier years, fishing.

Survivors include two sisters, Mary Lou (Larry) Hines, Fairfax, Virginia; and Brenda (Joe) Scheppers, Jefferson City; five nieces and nephews, Chris (Joanne) Hines; Joe (Rebecca) Hines, Anne Hines (Tim Schimpf) all of Virigina; Jamie Scheppers, Columbia; and Christy (Chris) Ebright, Jefferson City and six great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Services are private for the family.
