Eugene Charles Suttles, Jr.

Eugene C. “Sonny” Suttles, Jr., age 75, passed on to his Heavenly rewards on July 26, 2022, at the University Hospital in Columbia, Missouri.  He recently lived at the Lakeview Rehabilitation Center in Booneville MO.

Sonny was born on October 17, 1947, in St. Charles, Missouri, to Eugene C. Suttles Sr., who was stationed at the Naval Air Defense Facility at Lambert field in St Louis, and Mary Elizabeth (Thomas) Suttles.  He was given the nickname “Sonny” by his father and was always his father’s favorite.

He worked at several manufacturing jobs during his life until he returned home (Barry County) to help his father care for his Alzheimer’s stricken mother.  He stayed until both parents passed and then moved from southern Missouri to Callaway County to be with his brother Tom.  Unfortunately, he suffered a massive stroke after moving and has been continuously in nursing homes for many years.

Sonny was a master craftsman.  The great passion in his life was working with metal and creating beautiful handmade knives. He also made exquisite hand tooled leather goods.

He is survived by his brother Tom Suttles and wife Pat of New Bloomfield, MO; nieces, Melissa Bailey (Ryan) of Curryville, MO and Melanie Smith of New London, MO; and an aunt, Francis Thomas of Monett MO.  Sonny also loved his grand nephews and nieces: Clint Bailey, Callie Bailey, and Clara Bailey of Curryville MO; and Hannah Smith and Henry Smith of New London, MO.

Sonny will be greatly missed by his family but we know he will be in a better place.

Visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. Saturday July 30, 2022, at Dry Fork Baptist Church in New Bloomfield MO.

Funeral services will immediately follow at 11 a.m. Burial will be at Dry Fork Cemetery adjoining the church.  Dr. Lewis Curtis will conduct the services and burial.

Donations are suggested to the New Bloomfield Christian Community School and the Dry Fork Cemetery.
