David Lynn Smith

August 28, 1956 — November 8, 2022

Jefferson City, Missouri

David Lynn Smith, 66, of Jefferson City, passed away Tuesday, November 8, 2022, after succumbing to a long battle with kidney failure. He was surrounded by family and love in hospice care at Capital Region Medical Center.

David was born August 28, 1956, in Sedalia, Missouri, the son of Claude Eugene and Joretta (Cox) Smith.

David’s family moved to Jefferson City when he was a child, where he lived for the remainder of his life. In 1974, he graduated from Jefferson City High School. Soon after graduation, he met and began dating fellow graduate Jeanne Wallace May. David and Jeanne were united in marriage on August 12, 1978, in Bonne Terre, Missouri, and remained united until her death on September 29, 2021. David and Jeanne had three children, who were the center of their lives and their main source of joy. Their love for each other and for their children was apparent to all who encountered them.

David worked in construction for many years as a union laborer. When he retired from construction work, he worked as a rural mail carrier for the United States Postal Service. He was active in union matters and served for several years on the Executive Board of Laborer’s Local 662. He participated in worker strikes for fair wages and treatment, never crossed a picket line, and encouraged fellow workers to join a union to improve their lives and the lives of working men and women.

David enjoyed spending time with his children and particularly his grandchildren. He was an avid reader of the daily newspapers and kept informed with matters of interest. He loved listening to music, especially live music, and attended many concerts throughout his life. He was a sports fan and rooted for the St. Louis Cardinals, the Kansas City Royals, the Missouri Tigers, and the Kansas City Chiefs. He liked old movies and television shows, puzzles and puzzle books, Sudoku and math based brain games, and most of all spending time with his grandchildren, always playing with them, reading to them, or making them laugh.

Survivors include his three children, Tom (Margo) Smith of Rock Hill, MO; Chrissy (Luke) Lowenstein of Cameron, MO; and Annie (Mat) Bledsoe of Jefferson City; six grandchildren, Viv, Hank, Madison, Scarlett, Wally, and Leighton; and three brothers, Steve (Sharon) Smith of Jefferson City; twin Dennis Smith of Florida, and Mark (Rita) Smith of Jefferson City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jeanne Smith, his sister, Susan Frese, and a brother, Michael Smith.

Visitation will be noon - 2 p.m. Saturday, November 19, 2022, at Trimble Funeral Home in Jefferson City. A funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. with Rev. John Kerr officiating.

Burial will be at Riverview Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to Midwest Transplant Network, as David was a kidney transplant survivor.
