Alfred William “Chuck” Wittkop, 88, of Taos, passed away Sunday, June 2, 2019, at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Jefferson City.
He was born January 27, 1931, in Freeburg, Missouri, the son of the late Henry Christian and Clara Louise (Lauberth) Wittkop.
Alfred graduated from Freeburg High School. He served in the United States Navy on the USS Randall for two tours during the Korean Conflict.
He was united in marriage on June 11, 1960, in Taos, Missouri to Dorthy May Lage.
Alfred worked for the Rock Island Railroad as a depot agent for 20 years, and Central Electric Company as a warehouse manager for 20 years. He also owned a cattle farm in Taos for 47 years, that he operated with help of his brother Francis.
He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Taos where he was a lector and communion minister. He was also a member of the Taos Knights of Columbus, and the Pleasant Hill Lions where he served as secretary.
Alfred was an avid baseball fan. He played baseball and softball in Freeburg where he was a founding member of the Osage County Baseball League. In the Navy, they formed a team that would play pick-up games with local teams when their ship would go ashore. Later in Taos, Alfred coached many youth baseball and softball teams, and served as a Commissioner of the Taos Community League.
Alfred’s greatest enjoyment was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Dorthy Wittkop, Taos; five children, Diana (Kevin) Findley, Taos; Carol (Larry) Case, Jefferson City; David Wittkop (Kim Napolis), Taos; Nancy (Chris) Baldwin, Taos; John (Julie) Wittkop, Burlington, Iowa; 12 grandchildren, Kelli (Jake) Kloeppel, Westphalia; Kara Findley (Samantha Johnson), Wardsville; Nick Findley, Westphalia; Shay (Chelsie) Dulle, New Virginia, Iowa; Devin Dulle, Springfield; Eastin Dulle, Castle Rock, Colorado; Richard (Michele) Wittkop, Jefferson City; Katie (Zak) Kutscher, Wardsville; Korey Baldwin (Russell Bryant), Jefferson City; Kelsey Smith, Saint Joseph; Jake (Jackie) Wittkop, Dallas Texas; Kamryn Wittkop, Burlington Iowa; and 10 great-grandchildren: Alexis, Harpor, Elladi, Parker, Maxen, Korisa, Hunter, Liston, Lincoln and Korilie.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his step-mother, Mary Bauer Wittkop; and two brothers, Joseph and Francis Wittkop.
Visitation will be 4-7:00 p.m. Thursday, June 6, 2019, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Taos with a prayer service at 3:30 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Friday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Taos with the Rev. Michael W. Penn officiating.
Burial with military honors will be in St. Francis Xavier Catholic Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to the Special Learning Center or the St. Francis Xavier Catholic School.
