MARCELLUS HENRY MARKWAY

Marcellus Henry Markway, Sr., 90, of Wardsville, died Tuesday, October 6, 2009, at his residence.
He was born on May 15, 1919, in Wardsville, the son of Albert Bernard and Marie Elizabeth Winkelman Markway. Marcellus was a United States Army veteran serving during World War II in North Africa and Europe. He was united in marriage on November 22, 1945, in Wardsville, to Pauline Clara Stegeman who survives at the home. Mr. Markway owned and operated Marcellus Markway Construction until retiring in 1985. He was a lifetime member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Wardsville. He was a member of 4th Degree Knights of Columbus and Wardsville-Osage Bend Knights of Columbus, charter member of the Wardsville Lions Club, volunteered in Corrections at Missouri State Prison, and was a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity. Marcellus served on the Cole County Road and Bridge Advisory Board and Board of Directors at Halfway House in Columbia.
Other survivors include: ten children, Marc (Betty) Markway, Eldon; Mary Beth (Tom) Martz, Bloomington, Ind.; Dennis (Pam) Markway, Pueblo West, Co.; Jude (Mary) Markway, Donna (Wayne) Bernskoetter, Christopher Markway, all of Wardsville; Emily (Gary) Crawford, Leawood, Ks.; Albert (Debbie) Markway, Clinton, Mo; Rita Paul, Kansas City, Mo; John (Lisa) Markway, Tebbetts; thirty-two grandchildren, Stacia Kemna, Jeremia Markway, Melissa Albertson, Adam Rieke, Sara Passan, Catherine Pettus, Krista Gordon, Molly Hunter, Sally Bruns, Monica Pike, Brianna Markway, Cameron Markway, Gabriel Markway, Luke Markway, Levi Markway, Beth Pope, Shane Bernskoetter, Rustin Bernskoetter, Candice Frates, Brice Bernskoetter, Ciara Bernskoetter, Austin Bernskoetter, Landon Bernskoetter, Jill Crawford, Sam Crawford, Brandon Markway, Blake Markway, Taylor Markway, Erin Grubbs, Sean Paul, Lorelei Markway, Caleb Markway; twenty-four great-grandchildren, Ella, Lucy, Will, and Liza Kemna; Macy and Jada Markway; Gus and Kate Albertson; Gabriel and Elizabeth Rieke; Jack Passon; Sara, Joshua, and Caroline Gordon; Grace, Sam, and Heidi Hunter; Bridger Markway; Max and Eva Pope; Jack Bernskoetter; Gracie and Aubrie Bernskoetter; Maddox Grubbs; one sister, Mary Kay Duckworth; and two brothers, Maurice Markway (twin) and Louis (Doris) Markway. He was preceded in death by his parents; two grandsons, Gabriel and Michael Rieke; one sister, Dorothea Croff; and three brothers, Norbert, Jerome, and Albert Markway.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Friday, October 9, 2009, at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church with the Rev. Gregory C. Meystrik and Rev. Brendan Doyle officiating and Deacon Gary Christoff assisting. Entombment with military honors will be in St. Stanislaus Mausoleum. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Thursday at the church with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Additional visitation will be 10-11 a.m. Friday at the church.
